Introduction
A Susan Byrne Memorial Award of at least $10,000 is made annually for
women who are:
- mature graduates (thirty-five years or older) who wish to make a
change in career;
- citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand;
- resident in New Zealand while undertaking further tertiary education
or training, although it can be through an overseas institution.
Background
Susan Byrne was a member of NZFGW who died in 2004 and generously bequeathed
a sum of money to NZFGW with the suggestion that an award be established
for women graduates wanting to make a change of career in mid life.
She first graduated in 1975 at Victoria University of Wellington, and
in 1980 completed a Ph D at Imperial College, University of London. She
was a lecturer at Victoria, Massey University (Palmerston North) and eventually
the University of Auckland where she began in the Engineering School and
then moved to the Faculty of Business and Economics She progressed through
Mathematics, Operations Research and finally Management Information Systems.
